1. Technology Application Standards
§126.23. Computer Science II
(c)
Knowledge and skills.
(2) Foundations. The
student uses data input skills appropriate to the task. The student is expected
to:
(B) use digital
keyboarding standards for the input of data.
2.
Technology Standards in a Secondary Mathematics Class
(a) Basic
understandings.
(5) Tools
for geometric thinking. Techniques for working with spatial figures and their properties are essential in understanding
underlying relationships. Students use a variety of representations (concrete, pictorial,
numerical, symbolic, graphical, and verbal), tools, and technology including, but not limited to, calculators
with graphing capabilities, data collection devices, and computers) to solve meaningful problems by
representing and transforming figures and analyzing relationships.
In Geometry students have a hard time trying to
figure out how geometry actually works. I plan on using Geometers Sketch Pad to
help students grasp the concepts I plan to teach. GSP is a program that is very
fun to use and has a lot of utilities. I personally think that if students are
able to use GSP correctly they can learn more than they ever would from just
the direct instruction method. Being able to use technology and learn from it
will not only help the students in the real world but is also detrimental to
learning while in college. In this particular TEKS, Geometry has so many ways
for the teacher to incorporate
technology. Nearly every profession has some type of technology as well as some
type of Geometry included in the job description. I plan to incorporate
technology at every possible chance. I know that not all students will like it
at first but I know that they will appreciate me later.
3.
Reflection
It is hard to choose which TEK is the most
important. I personally think that every TEK should be addressed. If a teacher
ignores a TEK they take the chance of a student not being prepared. In
Mathematics students have to use technology. Mathematics in my opinion is what
makes the world function. Just in the last few decades I have seen technology
advance further than I ever thought it would. I know that in the next few
decades technology will be everything. So I have to make sure that my students
are able to use this technology. Students will need to know how to use
technology not only in Mathematics but also in every other subject. If our
future students are able to walk away knowing how to use technology in every
subject I know I will feel like I have completed my job as a teacher.
Hi Wes,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the last sentence of #2. It is the same thing with me when I first learned how to use Mathematica. Sometimes, our first reaction is: "This takes longer than if I could just write it down in pencil." Learning technology is not an easy task, much less learning how to use it with efficiency and speed. After learning some Mathematica commands crucial to many calculations in Linear Algebra, I can definitely appreciate it more.

I think Math is one of the harder subjects to teach and try to incorporate technology at the same time, but if you can do it that would be great because then they would have more resources to refer to. I agree completely with you about needing technology to help you in college and the real world, because techers and your boss aren't going to tell you where you can get extra help and where to find it you have to do it on your own. What a better way to start learning how to get extra help through technology and thats in the younger grades.

Let me start by saying that I really enjoy reading your blogs. I think it is probably because we are going into the same field and have many of the same views about math. I feel that math is one of, if not the most, important subjects. I like that there are so many resources and technologies for math teachers to use. They just have to take the time to find them and incorporate them into their lessons.

Good post, I for one had a hard time with math and Geometry because I'm a visual learner and if there was some type of technology teachers could use to help people see it visually would help me tremendously. I also think that Math is the one subject that always has new things coming in to help teachers teach it better to kids by giving them a visual learning aid.

Hello
ReplyDeleteI think that it's very important for each teacher to follow the Teks as best they can. Students need each and every opportunity to grow and learn. I hope that I can follow the Teks in such a way that I can cover more than the basics. Like you said math students do need technology I just wish there was more technology in the Teks.
